Saluting Wilma Rudolph for BLACK HISTORY MONTH

on February 23, 2012

Olympic track and field champion Wilma Rudolph became the first American woman to win three gold medals in track and field events at the Olympics. Her performance was all the more remarkable in light of the fact that she had double pneumonia and scarlet fever as a young child and could not walk without braces until age 11. She is remembered as one of the fastest women in track and as a source of great inspiration for generations of African-American athletes. Saluting Lena Horne for BLACK HISTORY MONTH

on February 23, 2012

Actress and singer Lena Horne became one of the most popular singers of her time, known for such films as The Wiz and her trademark song, "Stormy Weather." Though primarily known as an entertainer, Horne also was noted for her work with civil rights and political organizations; as an actress, she refused to play roles that stereotyped African American women. Horne received a Kennedy Center honour for lifetime contribution to the arts, and in 1989 she was given a Grammy Award for lifetime achievement. Saluting Olaudah Equiano for Black History Month

on February 22, 2012

Good Evening #mydarlings! It's time to learn about another Black Brit of note.  Today we celebrate Olaudah Equiano, also known as Gustavus Vassa. Mr. Equiano was African man who rose from slavery to become an activist, abolitionist, author, merchant, and explorer.  His autobiography helped abolish Great Brittain's involvement in the slave trade.

Olaudah Equiano wrote an autobiography depicting his experience in slavery. It served as one of the first testimonies in the abolition movement.

Saluting Ntozake Shange for BLACK HISTORY MONTH

on February 21, 2012

When I was contacted to record a song for the forcoloredgirls... soundtrack I was beyond honored. The play is such an important piece of literature for women of all ages and races; it was about time it was brought to life on film. Since originally being contacted to be on the soundtrack, I've read the play cover to cover more times than I can remember. Especially with the year I've had! Thank you Shange!

Ntozake Shange is a renowned playwright, poet, and novelist.
